It is the single most frequent lockout location we attend in Whitby, and it always follows the same script. You press the fob, you hear the chirp, you close the door, and the keys are already in the cup holder. Or the fob has quietly died over the winter and today is the day it gives up entirely.
The difference from a lockout at home is that you have somewhere to be. So here is the order to work through.
First: Do You Actually Need To Miss The Train?
In a lot of cases, no. If the lockout happens on the way in and the car will sit there all day anyway, the sensible move is often to get on the train and deal with the car on the way back. We can meet you at the lot in the evening at a normal service rate rather than at a rush-hour premium.
If it happens on the way out at seven in the evening, that is a different matter and it is genuinely urgent.
Second: Check Whether You Are Actually Locked Out
A meaningful share of GO-lot calls are not lockouts at all. They are dead fob batteries, and there are two things almost nobody knows about their own car.
- Your fob almost certainly hides a mechanical key. There is usually a small slider or release button on the side that lets a metal blade slide out.
- Your driver’s door almost certainly has a hidden lock cylinder. On most modern vehicles it is concealed under a small plastic cap on the handle, which pops off with a fingernail or that same key.
Between the two, a dead fob is a thirty-second problem rather than a callout. It is worth finding both on your own car this weekend, in daylight, rather than at seven in the evening in February.
If the interior lights are dead too, it is not a lock problem. A flat vehicle battery means the central locking will not respond at all. That is a boost, not a locksmith — and it is worth ruling out before making any call.
Third: Where Exactly Are You?
This is the thing that most affects how long you wait. Port Whitby GO is a large site with multiple lots and levels, and “the GO station” is not an address.
Tell us the lot, the level, the row, and the nearest landmark — a stairwell, an elevator, a light standard number, the platform end you are closest to. Ten seconds of detail on the phone routinely saves ten minutes of a technician driving around looking for a car.
And if you can, stay with the vehicle. We need you there to confirm ownership, and an unattended car being worked on attracts exactly the attention nobody wants.
Fourth: Have Your Paperwork In Mind
We will ask for proof the car is yours — ownership or registration plus photo ID. And yes, the registration is very often in the glovebox of the car you are locked out of. That is fine and it happens constantly.
Workarounds that normally do the job: an insurance document on your phone, an address on your ID that matches the registered address, or a registered owner who can confirm by phone. Mention the situation when you call so it is settled before anyone drives out.
What The Job Actually Involves
Non-destructive entry: a protective wedge creating a small controlled gap at the top corner of the door frame, and a long reach tool operating the interior handle or unlock switch exactly as you would from inside.
No slim jims — those belong to cars from thirty years ago, and on a modern door they catch the wiring loom, the side airbag sensor and the window regulator that all live inside the door skin. No coat hangers, for the same reason. And no broken glass on a routine lockout.

- Get a spare key made while you still have a working one. Duplicating is a modest job. All-keys-lost is a completely different operation and costs a multiple of it.
- Keep the spare somewhere else. Not on the same ring, and not in the car. A drawer at home, a desk at work, a partner’s keyring.
- Change the fob battery every year. A coin cell that was marginal in October fails at minus fifteen, which is why January produces a wave of these calls.
