A Trade You Can Verify Is A Trade You Can Trust
Everything we recommend rests on published standards. You should be able to look them up.
Locksmithing is unusual among trades in how little the average customer knows about it, and that gap is exactly what the scam operators in this industry rely on. Somebody who does not know that residential locks are graded, or that fire exits have legal requirements, or that a transponder is separate from a blade, has no way to evaluate what they are being told at their own door.
So this page is the reference material. What the grades mean, which codes govern exit doors in Ontario, what the recognised trade bodies are, and where consumer protection guidance actually comes from. None of it is proprietary and none of it is difficult.
If a locksmith — including us — tells you something that contradicts what is on this page, ask them to explain why. A good one will have a real answer.
Standards
The Specifications That Matter
These are the numbers that appear on packaging and in specifications, and what they actually mean.
ANSI/BHMA grades
The performance standard used across North America for locks and door hardware. Grade 3 is basic residential, Grade 2 is a real step up and suits most exterior home doors, Grade 1 is commercial-duty. The grade reflects measured cycle life, strength and forced-entry resistance — it is a test result, not marketing.
Cycle testing
How many operations the hardware survives in a laboratory. This is the difference that matters on a commercial door doing hundreds of cycles a day, and it is why residential-grade hardware fails early in a shop.
Bolt throw
How far the deadbolt extends. A full one-inch throw is the benchmark for an exterior deadbolt, because a shorter bolt is far easier to spread the frame away from.
Fire door ratings
Rated assemblies carry a label stating the rating in minutes. The rating covers the whole assembly — door, frame, hinges, closer and lock — and fitting a non-rated component voids it.
Restricted keyways
Key blanks not sold to the public, so copies can only be cut on the registered owner’s written authority. The most effective key-control measure available on a commercial system.
Access control credentials
Older low-frequency proximity cards carry a fixed number with no encryption and can be cloned cheaply. Modern encrypted smart credentials perform a cryptographic exchange instead and cannot.
Ontario requirements
The Rules That Apply To Your Doors
Two documents govern most of what a locksmith can legally fit in Ontario: the Ontario Building Code and the Ontario Fire Code. Between them they set out how doors used for egress must behave.
The central principle is simple and it is the one most often breached: occupants must be able to leave through an exit door in a single motion, without a key and without special knowledge. One push or one turn, and out. That is why a key-operated deadbolt on the inside of an exit door is a violation, and why chains, padlocks and secondary bolts fitted overnight on a fire exit are not acceptable regardless of how sensible they feel.
Rated fire doors carry their own requirements. The label states the rating, the rating covers the entire assembly, and the closer is part of it — which is why removing a closer or wedging a fire door open is not a minor liberty.
For rental housing, the Residential Tenancies Act governs lock changes and entry. A landlord generally cannot change locks on an occupied unit without providing a new key, a tenant generally cannot change them without consent, and entry normally requires twenty-four hours’ written notice with defined exceptions.

If a contractor tells you something contradicts one of these, ask which clause. The good ones know.
Consumer protection
How To Check Any Locksmith, Including Us
The locksmith scam is well documented and works identically everywhere: a local-sounding listing, an impossibly low callout quoted on the phone, an unmarked car, a claim that the lock must be drilled, and a bill several times the quote, in cash, with no paperwork.
The defences are all things you can do in under a minute. Ask for the legal business name and search it. Ask whether the technician arrives in a marked vehicle. Ask for the total price including the callout, and ask what happens if the job turns out to be different. Ask whether you will receive a written invoice.
When the vehicle arrives, look at it. When the technician gets out, ask who they work for. If the answer is vague, or the first suggestion is drilling a standard residential lock, stop the job before it starts — you are entitled to, and it costs you nothing but the time you have already spent.
Consumer protection in Ontario also gives you rights around estimates and pricing. Keep the invoice; it is the document that matters if anything goes wrong afterwards.

Where The Profession Organises Itself

ALOA
The Associated Locksmiths of America, the largest trade body in North America. Runs training, certification and a code of ethics, and is the usual reference point for professional standards.

Provincial and regional associations
Locksmith associations operate across Canada, offering training and continuing education. Membership is a reasonable signal, though it is not a licence.

Manufacturer certification
Lock and access-control manufacturers certify installers on their own product lines. This matters most for master key systems and electronic access control.

Safe and vault specialisation
A distinct discipline with its own training and its own equipment. Not every locksmith does safe work, and one who claims to without hesitation is worth a second question.
A Word On Licensing In Ontario
People often ask which licence a locksmith in Ontario must hold, expecting something equivalent to an electrician’s. The honest answer is that locksmithing is not regulated as a compulsory trade in the way many customers assume, and requirements vary by municipality.
That is precisely why the practical checks matter more here than in most trades. A legal business name you can look up, a marked vehicle, insurance, a written invoice, and a willingness to explain the code requirements behind a recommendation are the real indicators of competence.
Anyone can call themselves a locksmith. Not everyone can explain why your exit door cannot have a key on the inside, or why your frame matters more than your cylinder.
